Using Your Talents For God

Question: “If our talents are God given, then why are there so many people with great talents that use them to advance ungodly ideas. For example, secular musicians, TV folks etc.”. –Nick

Wow!What a great question.Nick, there are a lot of parallels and a few differences between talents and spiritual gifts. They both come from God. The both get better when we use them, and God wants both used on behalf of others. The most important use of our gifts and talents though is for the glory of God.You see, a person (whether or not they are a Christian) is given a natural talent. Theologians will say that it is because of a combination of genetics and the environment that they grew up.People grow up in families that have that same talent or gift. If you ever watch, “19 And Counting” you will notice that just about everyone in the family has the gift of playing the violin or some type of instrument.God does give certain individuals talents (Bazeleel in Exodus 31:1-6).

Spiritual gifts are given specifically to each Christian by the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:3, 6) at the moment that someone puts their faith in Christ. At that moment, the Holy Spirit gives to the new believer the spiritual gift(s) He desires the believer to have in order that they will hopefully use them for the building of the Church. (1 Corinthians 12:11). More specifically we are called for the work of the ministry to others.

The question still remains on how one can use their God given talents for ungodly ideas? We have to remember that (1) that person may have never accepted Jesus as their Savior, or (2) they have and are choosing not to give God the glory with those talents.

Finally, I appreciate this question so much because it reminds me to take a step-back and look at my own life and say, “Am I using the gifts and talents that God has given me for the glory of Christ?”More specifically, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Col. 3:17)Friends, this is so important, not only with making sure that others benefit from us using our Spiritual Gifts, but that Jesus is glorified in everything that we do!May you use your talents and gifts for His glory today!

In 5th grade I tried basket ball but dropped out. Instead stayed in my dance lessons from 1st grade to 12th grade, but also did golf in 8th-12th grade.

Heck yes it is......some of the counts and distances I had to go in marching band gave me more of a workout than track! I remember during marching season one year that we had to go like I don't remember exactly but like 10 yards in 8 counts so they taught us trumpets how to "jazz run" to the spot. So here we have to play notes, and then "jazz run" like the dancers and flags do while balancing a metal mouth piece? yeah that was fun! lol

They have baseball, but that's it. Not my favourite sport- regardless, I signed up a couple years ago... they couldn't get enough kids together for a team. I haven't bothered since then because I have enough on my plate with musical studies, and the the two area bound to result in some conflicting commitments.

I was in marching band too during the summer. I didn't mine the walking it was the heavy thick uniforms that we had to wear and then the 7 parades we always marched in between July 3rd and 5th, seems like it was always really warm during those days each year!
